Hanover state champs! Clifton-Clyde runner-up

Posted by Backroadsnews on Nov 22, 2008 in School sports |

The Hanover Wildcats beat Victoria in the 8-man division II state championship game today 46-14.

Clifton-Clyde lost a hard-fought TVL battle to take the runner-up spot to B&B in the 8-man division I championship game, 16-24.

Congratulations to both teams for tremendous seasons!

And I’m sorry to the folks who posted scores and updates. For some reason, all of the comments needed my approval to post and since I wasn’t home, I couldn’t approve them. Please feel free to post game comments or compliments to the teams under this post. Sorry again and I appreciate your cooperation.  –Dan

WOW!!!!!! Three teams from the league competing for the state title, how awesome is that!!! Hanover was clearly the best team in the league this year even though they did lose to B&B early in the year (note…. I believe it was raining that game). Congrats to them for a outstanding win.

As for CCE, you take a way those points they gave to B&B and I really think CC wins the game. But they never gave up and played hard all game.

Congrats to those coaches (Russ and Matt) for their outstanding years. For Russ to take the program from where it was (I think is in the running to be mentioned with Bill Snyder) to what he as made it into today. And Matt to make a good program into the best!!!

Like always, TVL = pure dominance

I don’t think what Steinbrock did is quite comparable to Bill Snyder. Clifton-Clyde and formally Clyde, did have the winningest coach in Kansas High school football history, and probably the best football tradition around. They did have some down years, but steinbrock didn’t inherit program anything like K-state bad.

This isn’t a knock against coach Steinbrock, just stating that I don’t think Clifton-Clyde was bad for all that long of a time period. And the tradition was always there, just had to be rekindled.

Well then you are saying that Notre Dame should be easy to rebuild a program and win national titles again, but look where they are at.

CC was at the bottom of the barrel for several years and there was no CCE pride and the tradition was out the window. I would like Dan to look up CC’s records from 92-2002. I remember when CC was the laughing stock and in that 10 year window they had some tough years.

All I am saying is that Russ is a way better coach than what he get credit for.

I am saying that CC will win state in 2 years and have a good shot at being back next year. He has a PROGRAM in place and it is working.

    kick me out,
was it not raining on B&B when they beat Hanover?

  • kick me out says:

Im not sure but I think someone told me that it was cold and rainy that game. You know weather like that would even out two teams and make it anyones game. I guess that is why they play the game. :)

  • get a clue says:

I believe in 1992 CC was ranked #1 in state and lost to Riley County in a district game 7-6, and in 96 #2 in state for some time before losing to state champion (or runner up) Frankfort in districts. Did not make playoffs either year however. They were bad for a while though. However I bet Washington, Linn or Valley Heights were never ranked #1 or 2 from 1992 – 2002. And yes there were some years it was good Washington was always on their schedule.

  • “get a clue” likes to take pot shots at local schools, I see.
Linn would probably have been close to a #1 or 2 ranking in 97 or 98.
I don’t know anything about Valley Heights.
Washington/Washington County has struggled, but at least they get to beat up on the likes of Belleville recently.
I think the point is, Russ is a good coach and has created a program that can breed success even when people think the program might be down (like they thought about this year).

  • get a clue says:

Nobody is arguing Steinbrock isn’t a good coach.

  • Feels like you’re trying to diminish his accomplishments by saying CC was really not that bad as an 11-man team in the 90s and 00s.

  • get a clue says:

I just stated what I thought was a fact about the other schools not being ranked #1 or #2. Didn’t say there wasn’t some decent or even good teams. My argument was that CC was bad, but not for that long of an amount of time. If you took it personal I’m sorry. Yes maybe an unintentional pot shot at Washington. I did not call out a coach, or players, just stated (in a rude manor maybe) CC had some years where Washington was only win CC had.

  • get a clue says:

I will leave the backseat coaching to the experts in the coffee shops. They seem to know whats best for each school. My point was originally that I didn’t think CC’s program was as bad as k-state when Steinbrock took it over. I don’t think I ever diverted from that original statement and I know I never said Steinbrock was not a good coach. Hope that clears things up.

  • I’d say that is accurate.
And I’d probably say there are teams through history that aren’t as bad as their records show. A decent team in TVL 8-man this year might end up with a bad record after having to face off against the three state teams, Axtell, etc. Maybe Blue Valley and Linn were pretty good this year, but having to play against this year’s powerhouses, it would be tough for anyone to put up some wins.
It is pretty rare for any small school not to have cyclical success. Hanover and Centralia’s success over the year is the exception to the rule.

    Get a clue:

You may not think that it was that bad but trust me it was. To go from 22 kids out for football to nearly 40 in the matter of two years tells the whole story, 1/2 the kids in the school didn’t want to out on the CCE uni and represent that pride and tradition you talked about.

Yeah, it really isn’t near the level of what the puddie cats put on the field for many years, but lets remember you can bring in your players in college, high school is what it is.

And to say that no one is saying coach steinbrock isn’t a good coach, then what about some of the cce fans saying they got out coached on Sat. Yeah, great pride!! I guess the only 2 losses in the season was to two state champs, should have beat one of them. lol

  • get a clue says:

I don’t doubt people were second guessing coach Steinbrock, my comment about no one is saying he isn’t a good coach was directed at the three of us in the discussion on here. Like I said earlier, I try to stay out of the coffee shop coaching as much as possible, although we are all probably guilty in some degree.

And I am sure after Hanover got beat by B&B early in the season, some people were questioning some of the decisions their coach made that night. It happens everywhere. The towns who get behind their kids, coaches and staff are going to be the ones who have the most success year in and year out.

I argued this in an earlier post and got beat up about it. It was the post people were complaining about Stegman and the volleyball coach at Washington. Those negative comments get passed onto the kids and their attitude and work ethic reflect it. Of course this is all an opinion, but I think that’s what blogs are for.

  • this is a joke says:

Now I have seen the 3-4 of you post the past few days now about this. I do and will say only one thing about it . “get a clue” said “Those negative comments get passed onto the kids” and it does . Im sure some of the coaches look @ this and when they see all the bad thing said about them im sure in some way the vibes gets past on to the kids . Im sure every coach in every school does the best as they can . Some don’t think that is the case but the coaches would not be doing this if they did not love the kids on the team . Im not saying either one of you are right . We should ALL support all the kids in sports weather the team gets a win or loss . No one will ever agree how a coach does the job but like I said before im sure that all of them do the best as they can . Remember it is for the kids not the mom and dad and we all should cheer them on .
