Economic struggles

Posted by Backroadsnews on Feb 9, 2009 in Uncategorized |

I’ve heard of layoffs at local manufacturing businesses, shut down of Titan Trailer in Waterville, troubles at nursing home in Washington, impending budget cuts for local government entities… what is a rural county to do?

Have you been affected by one of these situations? If so, how are you coping?

My family has been hit really hard with this. I resigned from my position with the water district after being with them for 10 years because I had taken a job with the State of NE helping people get off of welfare. I started in July and got laid off in, I believe, October, because basically the State was running out of money because there were so many people on welfare that they couldn’t afford to keep all their offices open. Shortly after Tim was laid off from Titan. I couldn’t get unemployment because I wasn’t there long enough (hadn’t even made it through the probationary period), but Tim is pulling unemployment. It’s also really hard for us because we haven’t had insurance for 6 years (since Tim left Landolls). There seems to be no real jobs available and we really so no end in site, but….our kids are healthy, Tim and I are stressed, but happy, and we have family to at least listen to our whining (and now you guys…lol…just kidding). We are not ashamed to admit that our children are on the free lunch program and get Healthwave insurance and we will be trying to get assistance with our heating bills. We are doing what we need to do for our family and our kids are learning that right now we can’t afford to do the things we used to, so we are spending more time together (God works in mystery ways, so they say). I believe that we and everyone else will get through this difficult time in the economy and I hope we all maybe learn a little compassion for others and understand that as bad as things may be they aren’t the end of the world.

With Hope and Love to All,
