Pool vote
Posted by Backroadsnews on Feb 12, 2009 in Uncategorized |
Washington is a couple months away from the vote on a new pool for the community. I really haven’t heard anyone talk about it much around town. I suppose nobody is really thinking of swimming during the winter.
How do you think the vote will turn out? Do you think it will pass easily, barely pass or fail, or fail miserably? I’ll save my comment until I hear a few of your guesses.

And don’t base your guess on what you HOPE will happen, base it on what you PREDICT will happen.
Well last time did it not pass just by a few votes . I know some that did not vote on it last time and are going to vote on it this time . I predict
it will happen this time .
Before the vote happens I would like to see more information. Dan would you research a few things for me and publish it in the WCN?
1. Yearly budgets and income for the last 5-10 years of each current Washington County swimming pools Greenleaf, Hanover, Linn and Washington.
2. An itemized estimate to fix the current swimming pool from a company that does that, not a company that is trying to sell you a new swimming pool. (The new city super tends to be all for the new pool however, he has not moved his family here to help support the school etc…maybe not planning on staying long. Tends to shake my confidence in his opinion.)
I dont want to go to far off the pool thing but OY you are right about this part . ” (The new city super tends to be all for the new pool however, he has not moved his family here to help support the school etc…maybe not planning on staying long. Tends to shake my confidence in his opinion.) “
I think you guys are way off on Kurt with your comments and you’ll just have to trust me when I say – lay off.
OY,
All of the pools lose money each year, but are provided as a service to the community. What good would the budget comparison do? And what does that have to do with the new pool?
We fixed the pool 10 or 15 years ago. Now we have problems again. I think we’re getting closer to being beyond fixing.
That said, I don’t know what I think about the vote. Not that I have a vote… I just pay property taxes here.
I think a new pool would be great as long as it is on the sales tax so everyone pays for it not just the property owners. And i dont think we need one quite as big as the first idea.
I think the pool is starting to become a money pit . I would rather have a new pool and stop burning our money away . If we dont get one then the one we have now will @ some time be closed for safety reasons I dont want that .
I wish they wouldn’t have taken out the slide. It’s always the most popular feature of any modern pool I’ve been to.
I would like to see it pass but I don’t believe that it will. I just have a feeling that some people without children won’t vote for it because it does not effect them so why waste the money on it
(this is no way a put down to anyone that feels this way or doesn’t feel this way)
It is a matter of opinion wether this pool is worth fixing. Depends on who you talk to.
Has the city asked for an estimate to repair the current pool? If so, what is the cost? So far no one wants to share this information. Why is that?
How does the current budget compare to the proposed budget for new pool? Insurance, life guards, chemical, utilities…do we have a proposed budget for these?
I’m quite thankful for the pool we have and I would like to make an educated decision on the need for a new one. Until I have estimate on the cost to repair the old one….. I can’t imagine anyone who can make that decision wisely.
Reality is…property be it a home, business, or a city pool require maintance at a price.
Maybe the questions to ask are, what is the sales tax revenue for Washington City? How is the econonmy in Washington? Is it there a downward trend like the rest of the country?
The attacks at the beginning of this post on city manager Kurt Hassler are exactly what’s wrong with this blog. People use it to unfairly bash others because they can do so anonymously. And yes, I realize that by bashing this blog without signing my real name, I am doing the same thing. That is precisely why I do not post to this blog usually. However, when I see someone that I believe is a very good person as well as an excellent city manager being maligned unjustly by people who OBVIOUSLY do not have all, if any, of the facts, I feel the need to defend this person because I know he will not stoop so low as to try to defend himself.
Two of Kurt Hassler’s children have moved to Washington with him, and they ARE attending the public school here, so your “shaken confidence” can be restored.
I am truly sorry for my comment towards your family. I apologize for not knowing the facts and thank you dc for setting me straight. I meant no harm towards your family. Again I am sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks dc… kinda.
I hate to disappoint you, but neither Mr. Hassler nor anyone else in the town of Washington is part of my family. I am simply very tired of reading unsubstantiated slurs toward other people on this blog. I can see from the responding post that I must have hit a nerve. I hope I also managed to hit a conscience in some of the people who continually make a practice of bashing others on this blog.
I guess if you think this blog is bad, you ought to sit at Short Stop some morning for half an hour. I think you’d consider this blog pretty tame after that experience.
I asked for my comment to be removed but it was not witch is ok with me . Like OY I did to jump the gun a bit . So sorry to you dc and Kurt . Some do even me unfairly bash eachother and I have befor said sorry for saying something like im doing now . So I hope that you dc and Kurt execpt mine and OY’s apology for this.
sorry
Dan is right .If you sit @ ST you will find out that everyone knows how much TP you just used to wipe your but with . But I think that is a new blog and we have got off track a bit again so lets all kiss and make up and go back to the pool vote . Ok thanks
I predict the pool vote will NOT pass because of the uncertainty with the economy. Just bad timing right now. The swimming pools in this county are a money loser for each town – there’s no way for them to turn a profit. That should not be the issue when deciding to vote on it. I think the pools are important to each of the towns they’re located in. I hope it passes.
My family and I do not live in your town but we do come here often because we love the town of Washington. The biggest reason we come is because we love your park. Knowing how old the pool is reminds me of something my dad (who is a general contractor) always says about adding on to an old house. It can be done but usually you have problems and end up sinking more money into it then intended. Sounds like what is going on with your pool. It’s a big expense to build a new pool but in the long run – I would entertain the idea that it will actually be saving you money down the road. Getting back to when we come to your town, we not only go to the park but we may stop to eat and usually end up spending money at Casey’s or some other place. My point being that a nice pool along with some of the other good things you have going on in Washington will attract more people and bring in more revenue from people like us in your surrounding areas. Just a thought.
