Stories I’m tracking down for the week/ mostly Helms lawsuit now

Posted by Backroadsnews on Mar 3, 2009 in Uncategorized |

Got a couple leads last night and this morning on stories for this week.

USD 223 superintendent Steve Joonas has evidently taken a job as the Twin Lakes special ed cooperative director for the Clay Center school district. The co-op serves USD 223 and other districts.

Also, I need to get over to the district court files and check out a report that a county commissioner is suing a former employer.

We’ll see what I find out.

  • Nobody on here ever said they hated Mr. Joonas. This post actually has comments on both Joonas and Gene Helms. Sorry about that.
We’ll have pictures of the band performance in this week’s paper, and I must say that I think it is possibly the best photo package we’ve ever had.

Nice plug Dan….now you have me excited.

    arguendo,

Some of us are pretty close to the facts because of our investment situations with the dairy.

Im not going into detail. But I believe you would feel the way I do.

  • arguendo says:

Yes, I wouldn’t expect you to disclose any details! But, I will more or less take your word for it. So, I’m sure you have a right to be frustrated. However, there are always two sides to a story. :)

  • ksfrmgrl says:

Maybe they should get work comp like most other companies do – and if not – pay for disability insurance at least for employees. How many stockholders and their families work there? Maybe an effeciency expert could help them out. Just a thought. Stockholders might want to think about that.

  • slumdog says:

A previous post mentioned that this is not the first lawsuit filed against the dairy during its brief history. If that is in fact the case and I was investing my money in this place, I would have to start looking a little deeper and question whether or not the dairy is being mismanaged in some way.

  • kick me out says:

arguendo, Your wrong about one thing there, there is only one story.

  • kick me out says:

ksfrmgirl, they can’t afford to have work comp. Who’s going to come up the 60-80K it would take. Its not like they can raise the price of their milk. Thats why you have personal insurance I guess. Since your a farm girl you would understand you can’t dictate your prices. Not real sure about the disability insurance, but its not like they don’t have insurance. The employee’s are aware of the situation when they sign on.

  • Tim says:

Actually you both are wrong. Usually there are three sides to every story….your side, their side and the truth. But for this topic, I would have to say KMO is probably right.

  • Slumdog,
The other lawsuit was totally different and a whole different can of worms.
    Everyone,
Remember, we don’t call out identities on this blog. If you all start doing that, most of the people will quit posting and things will get boring. I agree I’d love it if everyone had the guts to sign their name, but it won’t likely happen.

  • kick me out says:

Dan thats a dumb rule. Post your name if you want to say it. ;)

    Shane

  • kick me out says:

Tim, not that I would say that you are wrong here, but I believe the only story I should ever tell is the actuall and truthful story. Not slant it to favor me some how and thats not the story. Thats why there is different versions but really only one story. :)

  • ksfrmgrl says:

I guess the dairy is really lucky to have any employees at all if they can not afford wc or ds.ins. My work group Blue cross health ins. will not cover injury that happens at work. I checked on this after reading some of this stuff. As I said, maybe an effeciency expert could help out with how to cut costs in some areas so they could afford insurance. (no, I am not an effeciency expert!) The stockholders should be very concerned about the liability of having no insurance is all I am saying. I understand both sides, but in this day and age is it really not good business to try to operate a business in this way.

  • kick me out says:

They really don’t have a choice here. It just simply can’t be done. It does suck they can’t offer it and like most and all farming businesses. They do have insurance though but it is strictly liability. So I guess I not really concerned becuase they really don’t have to many options from what I understand. Its just like a farmer. They don’t have workmans comp.

Well, when times get tough and you need money, beggers can’t be choosers. Why do you think they have o hire so much forgien labor? The avg white boys don’t want to do it. I am luck to have to job that i do, but when I got out of college I asked post & pipe if they had an night time work and the dairies as well cause I needed the money. Now I work here. Like I said I am lucky.

Maybe they should be lucky they have a job as well.

  • ksfrmgrl says:

forgien labor?(just kidding) I think you missed the point. If you run a business, you need to protect your employees – cut costs somewhere else. Other businesses do. Out of 100 investors you mentioned, I am surprised they allow this. If the dairy is making money they should have insurance – if not, look at management and if necessary make changes. I have been on both sides of the fence and totally see both sides – but to operate with no wc is not good business.

  • mom says:

    ksfarmgirl
Blue Cross will cover you but only after you demonstrate to them that you are not covered by WC and why. Just like any other time they make you jump through a bunch of hoops in the hope that you will just say forget it and pay yourself. My youngest got stiches from a farm job injury and BC wasn’t going to pay until we insisted and filled out forms that stated why there was no WC and YADA YADA YADA, but they did eventually pay the bill.

  • slumdog says:

    Backroadsnews,

It doesn’t matter what kind of lawsuits have been filed. A smart businessman would look below the surface to find the source of the problem. If multiple lawsuits have been filed against the company I am investing my hard-earned money in, I would analyze the situation carefully and consult widely before taking narratives from the management as concrete evidence.

Also, you should have explicitly stated in the newspaper article when directing readers to this forum, that the only opinions you would accept as reasonable were biased views ridiculing Mr. Helms.

    KMO,

You are right. Times are tough and people who have jobs right now are fortunate. Knowing that, don’t you think it is possible that the “side of the story” you are hearing secondhand from the management of the dairy could be misleading? To casually state, “Some of us are pretty close to the facts because of our investment situations with the dairy. Im not going into detail. But I believe you would feel the way I do,” is the kind of simple-minded arrogance that gets businessmen and their money in trouble.
Ultimately, all individuals want to save face and their job, which can lead to deceit. I would want to know the truth without a reasonable doubt, before spouting contempt against a person on a public forum.

  • I just hope it goes to trial and they don’t settle. Let an unbiased jury make the decision.

  • kick me out says:

So your saying that i am simple minded and my money is in touble?

Also you are saying that I am based my opinions off of the managment of the dairy? Am i missing something here? Have I stated exactly where my information is coming from?

Lets don’t jump to assumptions, right? Lets not be simple minded, right? Who’s “side” of the story have you heard?

My questions is this then, if it was not Gene Helms filing the lawsuit then why hasn’t he spoken up and cleared his name? If he doesn’t want this to happen, why wouldn’t he then again clear his name and reputaiton. Then let Gene clear his name and state the facts beyond what is known. If I am wrong Gene will have my personal appoligy. Until then I will run with the facts that are known to me becuase of the faith I have in them.

You know, lets be honest here. We all hope this is out of Gene’s control and that he has no say so in this situation. Its not like we want to see this happen.

    Shane
