To post or not to post… that is the question
Here is the comment from US Marshal that I pulled off the Attitude post because I felt it was not appropriate before the election:
Getting you all back on track, the issue was the sales tax for a pool. I called Mike Uhlrich who just retired as Washingtons pool manager last fall. Strangely he told me that the current poll is not in near as bad of shape as we are lead to believe, and that it could very well serve the community for another 20 years! But hell lets bulldoze it out and put Washington deep in debt so it can keep up with the Jone’s. Interestingly I see quite a few Washington folk at the Fairbury Wal-mart, I guess they know Nebraska doesn’t have a sales tax on food.
I will assure you of 1 thing, If the sales tax issue passes Washington will see less revenue than previous years . And for those of you that live outside of the city limits of Washington it just infuriates me when you voice your support for the sales tax issue. If you go buy a new $30,000 dollar vehicle you are exempt from the extra $300.00 tax that someone living in Washington has to pay. Or if your House burns down or is destroyed by a tornado and it costs $200,000 to replace it you save $2000.00 over someone living in Washington.
Okay, me again: I had no problem with the majority of the post. This person is entitled to their opinion. However, I did not like that he put words into Mike Uhlrich’s mouth. Mike is a candidate for Washington City Council. I could not guarantee Mike said that about the pool (and if I start following up on every comment on this blog, we don’t have a print newspaper any more.) Also, if Mike wanted to say this to the public, he could’ve done it in his questionnaire.
My concern was, if people were against the pool, votes might be swayed toward Mike in the election. If folks were for it, they might be upset with his comment and might vote against him, all because of this blog comment from an anonymous person talking about what Mike supposedly said. True or not true, I didn’t think it would be fair to have this statement made public without Mike making it personally to me or on the blog.
I told US Marshal at least twice that they could repost the comment with referring to Mike, but this person chose not to and instead called me a fascist.
So did I make the right decision? What do you think? I think I made it very clear to US Marshal that all they had to do was edit it a bit and they could still post their thoughts on the pool – I didn’t want to censor Marshal’s opinion on the pool, but he/she did not try to repost.

You made the right decision. For all we know the comment was just a little ‘campaigning’ by US Marshall himself (or herself) – I have also heard Mike discussing the pool and I heard a different story then US Marshall.
Seems to me US Marshall just doesn’t want a pool.
Also US Marshall, if you’re buying a $30,000 vehicle, my bet is that you can probably afford the sales tax on it. However, (please correct me if I’m wrong) but don’t you pay the sales tax amount of the area in which you purchase the car? If I purchase a vehicle in Topeka, Ks and the tax is 7% – I pay the 7% tax -where the sale was made – you don’t pay sales tax based on where you live – it’s where you make the purchase —-So you’re statement about that confuses me.
well dan I think you made the right decision, the only other thing you could have done was to call mike yourself and ask if he truly said that. But I still think you did good.
You made the right decision Dan. It is not right for US Marshall to be spouting off about Mike ESPECIALLY when his name is on the ballot. I commend you for your decision!
Thank you Dan for doing the right thing. I have a hard time believing my Uncle Mike would say that before an election that he is running in. I know I’m biased on this subject because it is a family member. But I truely thank you for not publishing that before people had a chance to vote. If US Marshal is against the pool, which it sounds like, that is fine and that’s his opinion. But it is not right to drag someone else’s name into it.
I think you are a FASCIST. I kidd.
Good call, Dan — agree completely with you!
I personally have talked to Mike Uhlrich and he said that he has never said that the pool will last 20 years. I do not know where this U S Marshall is getting his information from.
When we bought our vehicle, we paid sales tax in the location we bought it and then since our local sales tax was higher, we had to pay that additional 1%. We were told that if it was higher where we bought it, we didn’t get a refund.
I have bought several new vehicles in my life and paid sales tax were i bought them and never had to pay extra sales tax in Washington but I haven’t bought a new vehicle since 2006 it may have change. Dick
Last car I bought was from out of state and I paid the tax to Washington Co.. It was from an individual, so maybe that makes a difference, as opposed to purchasing from a dealer.
Yes, it does make a difference – when you purchase a vehicle privately from an individual, then you do pay the Washington Co. tax. When purchasing from a dealer – you pay the tax where the dealer is located.
Unless of course, the dealer is out of state. Almost every vehicle we own has been bought out of state (other than Tim’s HD babies), and we’ve always come back and paid the WS county tax on them. I think with one of the Harley’s we paid the tax in Salina and I can’t remember if we paid more taxes here or not. It’s just one of those things that I have to pay so I don’t pay much attention to it. I just know that out of state is going to be the WS county rate.

If I do not live in Washington (in Washington County) and buy a car from a private individual in say Manhattan, what is the sales tax rate I will pay after October?
