Words can’t describe…

Posted by Backroadsnews on Jun 27, 2009 in Uncategorized |

I’m willing to bet that if Hanover’s fireworks display isn’t the best in Kansas, it has to be in the top five or less easily. Maybe Wichita or Overland Park could top it… maybe.

I’ve been to Manhattan’s a few years back and it downright sucked compared to Hanover’s.

I was running late to get there for pictures tonight and after seeing that the parking lot was full, the sideroads had cars and even the side roads in the country had parked vehicles, we finally pulled into a spot we weren’t supposed to park at on the way to the Pony Express station historic site.

Anyway, we could barely hear the music (I don’t know if it was on a radio station this year or not) but the display was a epiphany for the visual senses. I couldn’t believe the flame blasts during one song… amazing. A couple of the huge fireworks would not fit into the frame of my camera… awesome. The variety included fireworks I would never have imagined… stunning. It has been two or three years since I’ve gone to the display and I knew it would be good, but I would never have imagined it would have been this good.

Seriously. I just don’t even know what to say here.

When we were leaving, I was following someone with Republic County plates who was following someone with Nebraska plates. As I went south to drop my mother off near Barnes, I saw several vehicles turn toward Waterville. When I got back home, I noticed many more cars than usual heading south on highway 15. This event pulled folks from everywhere.

I can’t imagine how many people were there. Had to be well into the thousands.

Absolutely stunning.

Last year, Pat Bruna and PFB Pyros didn’t know if he’d be back to do this year’s display. Thank God he did return. And sorry Pat, but you’ve raised the bar so dang high now that I don’t think you’ll ever be able to give up this gig. You can be proud of the job you did.

Simply amazing.

What did you all think, because with the number of vehicles at the event, I assume several of you were there too.

I’m upset I didn’t video record it. I could’ve posted parts of the display to YouTube. But then again, watching the display on YouTube would have been like watching Star Wars for the first time on YouTube instead of in the movie theater. Too amazing for such a small video service.

It is 11:40 p.m. and there are still more cars than usual driving south. Has to be some folks finally returning from hanging out in Hanover.

I’ve been to the Lake Shawnee display more than once, and Hanover’s top those by far! 12:15 and we just got home. Couldn’t hear the music, but still was awesome. That last round I could feel my eardrums vibrate.

I didn’t go but my kids did and they really liked it. I have such a hard time with this holiday. I’m one of those moms that just knows I’m going to end up in the ER for hours because something has happened to one of my kids, or my biggest kid (Tim). I just truly can’t enjoy it because I’m so scared of fireworks. My family is used to it but it still disappoints them. From everything I’ve heard it sounds awesome so maybe next year I’ll try to go.

It was unbelievable. We got there about 8:00, and there were already streams of cars coming in from all directions. The food that was served in the new building was really good.

My kids have been ooing and awing over Hanover’s fireworks every year that they have gone with their friends so this year I made the trip with them. We were warned to come in on the backroads. Great advice because to my surprise, we easily parked our van and walked down to where the action was going to take place. No waiting, no hassels. I now know what all the “fuss” has been about. What an awesome display!!! It took my breath away at times and I couldn’t wait for what would light up the sky next. I was amazed by how it was perfectly orchestrated with the music and the use of classical music and hard rock and roll. We totally enjoyed our evening in Hanover. Thank you to all who had a hand in it! My daughter thinks it would be awesome to have fireworks at her wedding reception. Since she is 10 we will have some years to save up for Pat to work something up for her. Thanks to Pat and his crew!!!

I worked the west gate…not nearly as busy as the South gate. Still I met folks from Lawrence, Wamego, and Lincoln, Fairbury and other surrounding towns. And everyone agrees, “Best fireworks display around.” Hanover knows how to throw a party!

The last several years you can tune to KNDY (95.5) and it’s nice that you can hear the music from wherever you sit then. The display was wonderful and we look forward to getting together every year. I hope Pat knows how many people praise and enjoy his show and hope that he’s able to keep it up for the years to come. I was sitting with folks from Wamego, Olathe, Washington, Beatrice, Wymore, Marysville. It is really starting to draw the crowd. I’ll even bet the Lord above enjoys it.

As the sparks and glow of one particularly spectacular display faded, we could see the distant blinking lights of an airplane high above the carnival grounds. Wonder what view those folks got!

I agree, but that is the nature of this beast. If the Hanover fireworks stunk, we’d probably have a whole lot more comments.
But as it is, we don’t have too many Hanover folks commenting on here, so that might be part of it.
I bet the entire county closes up shop next year to go, though.

I went and they were absolutely awesome! They were better than any fireworks I have ever seen – including major sporting events and shows in Topeka, Kansas City, and Denver. Thanks for the show and count me in for next year.

Saw it, filmed it, and posted a short clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lem9-Gwknxw.

You’re right Dan, it was hard to fit it all into the frame. Pat Bruna & gang did a great job!

I watched the fireworks from Boston on TV last night. I probably didn’t get the full effect from TV, but IMO the people that did the ones in Boston should take lessons from Pat and the people in Hanover.

I’m a member of the Hanover Chamber and I want to say thanks to all who visited Hanover. We’re glad you enjoyed our fireworks display and we appreciate your support of our concession stands. We’re proud of Pat Bruna and his dedicated family and crew, and are grateful to so many wonderful folks in Hanover who pitched in to help with food, parking, donations, fire, security, etc. It was truly a community effort.

See you all next year!
