If the symptoms are not really serious, such as a temperature that comes down with the Tylenol/Ibuprofen/bedrest/fluids protocol, then keep the child at home. If, however, the temperature does not come down, the child is having shortness of breath, or violent vomiting/diarrhea, etc. then call the dr. before taking them in. Write down the symptoms and answer the ER's questions as truthfully as you know how. They will decide if the child should be seen. If so, follow their advice. Invest in some mucinex, tylenol, ibroprofen (age appropriate) and a good thermometer. Use them as needed. Keep the child comfortable, but at home, to avoid infecting everyone around them. This may not make you popular when they miss their favorite Halloween party/dance, football games, etc. but it may prevent a hospital visit later on. Most of the cases are not serious enough to warrant hospitalization. But your child is contagious as long as he/she is running a fever. IF in doubt, call the ER at your local hospital.
It's such a tough call with kids. I want to make sure my kids stay healthy but I also don't really want them to get the H1N1 flu shot. Samantha got the nasal H1N1 on Monday because she works with young children and I am worried. So far she seems fine and she got her regular flu shot today. I think I'll just keep my kids in bed and not take them to the doctor unless they get a high fever. Bradley has had convulsions with high fevers so that always worries me a little. I hope things don't get too bad and everyone stays as healthy as possible.
