What about the future of the old hospital?

Posted by Backroadsnews on Jan 20, 2010 in Uncategorized |

If the new hospital is built this year, what do you all think should happen to the old hospital.
I, for one, am not sure it would be cost-effective to retrofit it for a new purpose. There has been discussion about turning it into office space for various governmental entities like the health department and Pawnee Mental Health. I don’t know if that would work out or not.
If it is to be torn down, the property might be an ideal location for a housing development. Roads, water and utilities are already there so the city wouldn’t have to extend it like they would if housing was built around the new hospital.
I don’t know anything about this sort of thing, but I think housing would be better than a vacant building or an empty lot.

How about a jail. The one we have now is full and making money.

If you were the groundskeeper Dick, that’d be the prettiest dang jail this county has ever seen!
(And sounds like I have a story idea too.)

Good idea but how much would it cost to do that ? I’m sure thats not going to be easy to do . Something should be done with it and not let it just sit and rot away . Then it will not be worth poop . :)

I seem to remember there was thread about the new pool and people were wanting to rather have a health club. Wouldn’t the space in the old hospital accommodate a project like that? Food for thought I guess.

don’t you think we should wait to see if a new hospital is really built before we make plans for the old building.

I started the post with “If”.
We do lots of speculating on this blog so I figured we could speculate on this too.

Just an idea:

A community rec center.

Renovating it for a new jail would cost millions. With issues over sales tax going up and the economy in such a depressed state, people probably wouldn’t want to pay more taxes to fund renovation for a new jail. There are more codes and state mandates on jailing facilities than there used to be.

Community rec center would be absolutely wonderful. And kinda what I was thinking, but figured no one would agree. Lol

I wonder if it could be turned into some sort of assisted living space?

“IF” it is razed, I would be very interested in bidding for a housing site. I think it has excellent potential for that. I, too, am optimistic about the city and county. I live in a big city and very often I hear people express a desire to get “back” to the small communities. It’s a movement that is just getting statrted but I’m confident will gain momentum.

If interested in Housing development, talk to the Planning committee ,there is room for development around the new building. Hospital grounds are taking up around 10 acres., they have 40 acres.
