Time for a transition

It’s been pretty obvious to anyone following this blog that the activity level has been down for some time now.
I’ve found it is easier to keep the Washington County News Facebook page updated, as compared to this blog. The Facebook page has the added benefit that it delivers my posts/updates to you through your Facebook news feed (as long as you “like” the Washington County News) rather than forcing you to surf on over to the blog site independently.
So from now on, news flashes, updates, photos, YouTube videos, etc., will be posted to the Washington County News Facebook page, instead of here.
Some of you may say “I don’t have Facebook.” Well, I guess what I’m saying is that it is time you get a Facebook account. It is free to have and is easy to set up and use. If it weren’t easy, it wouldn’t be so hugely popular. Any more, having a Facebook page is as common, and even necessary, as having a phone of some kind. And Facebook is used heavily by people of all ages, so you shouldn’t think this is a forum for young adult party pics (like I used to think.)
To start a Facebook account, click here.
To “like” the Washington County News Facebook page, click here then push the “like” button on the page.
For the time being, this Backroads Newsroom site will be stagnant as I re-imagine a use for it. I have some ideas, though, so it might not take to long to get some action back on here again.
See you on Facebook!

First National Bank waterwall sculpture is 25 years old

The waterwall sculpture at First National Bank of Washington was carved out of brick by artist Jack Curran 25 years ago. It continues to be the setting for many portraits for anyone visiting the bank’s community room. The sculpture was envisioned to be an extension of the garden above it. The video is a look at some of the special elements of this wonderful piece of public art.

Tornadoes and politics

Evidently there is a tornado near Hollenberg or at least threatening right now. Be careful and be aware.
And speaking of tornadoes, check out this great political ad from California. If all political ads were like this, I would not complain so much about the constant media barrage that occurs in the build up to elections.

What were you doing when the planes hit?

Many people have been recalling on our Washington County News Facebook page what they were doing when they first heard the news of the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001.
If you’re not on Facebook, feel free to comment here. What were you doing when you heard a plane had hit one of the twin towers?
This is the new JFK assassination moment for this generation. Most people will never forget their 9/11 moment.

Digital media and the classroom

Here is a thought-provoking video created by K-State Salina professor Bill Genereux, of Clyde, looking at the relationship, or lack thereof, of digital media in the modern classroom.
How does your school treat digital media? Is it integrated into the curriculum as seen in a few examples on this video? Or is it banned?
I think we can all agree digitial media like YouTube, Facebook and others are having a huge impact on our society right now and will only continue to increase in relevance in the future.
How do you think schools should treat digital media?

College football kickoff

I know this isn’t exactly local, but I’m sure college football is one of the main topics of conversation this weekend.
• K-State started with a great win over UCLA with Daniel Thomas telling the national media to “look at me” with a great rushing performance.
• KU lost to NDSU. What is a Jayhawk fan supposed to think?
• Oklahoma less than stellar, to say the least.
• Nebraska won easily, but their really annoying coach was all over how bad his defense was in the post-game. Seriously Bo? Give your guys a little credit. Jeez, he is more annoying than Snyder was in the “I hate the media” years.
• Listening to post-game from some Nebraska radio station, they made sure to cover the Big 10 scoreboard roundup. That was strange. I actually don’t mind Nebraska (not the coach) but this will take some getting use to!
What’s your take on opening weekend?
